A resident of Nagasaki, Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on business for his employer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries when the city was bombed at 8:15am on August 6, 1945. The following day he returned to Nagasaki and, despite his wounds, returned to work on August 9, the day of the second atomic bombing.
He returned to work! Three days after surviving an atomic bomb. Personally, I’d have taken the week.
It wasn’t until 2009 that the Japanese government finally recognised his presence at the Hiroshima bombing aswell as Nagasaki.
He died last year, aged 93. Respect.
(Thanks to Joe Kiely for pointing me to this)
