Twas an Irishman who freed Chile from the Spanish

His name was Bernardo O’Higgins. And together with José de San Martín (not as Irish), he freed Chile from Spanish rule in the Chilean War of Independence.

"Hurry with this painting, will you? I've to deliver this letter, post-haste"

Alright, so he was only half-Irish. He was the illegitimate son of a Spanish officer born in Sligo. And I’m not sure if he ever actually set foot in Ireland, but there IS a plaque in honour of him in Merrion Square in Dublin.

Thanks to my new work colleague Jorge from Chile for pointing out my ignorance of this.
